About Carmen
One of the world’s most famous operas returns to Adelaide in a bold new production by State Opera South Australia.
Georges Bizet’s Carmen tells the story of the fiercely independent Carmen and the soldier Don José, whose passionate relationship develops into jealousy, obsession and tragedy.
Set in 1825 Seville, State Opera South Australia’s 2026 production is directed by Laura Hansford and stars South Australian Charlotte Kelso as Carmen, alongside Gerard Schneider as Don José, Samuel Dale Johnson as Escamillo and Desiree Frahn as Micaëla.
Performed in French with English surtitles, Carmen features some of opera’s most recognisable music and is equally suited to seasoned opera lovers and those experiencing opera for the first time.
